  NASHVILLE (BP) -- Joyce Rogers had just called her daughter Janice Edmiston to report her safe arrival at the optometrist's office. At 85, the widow of Adrian Rogers is grateful for their daughter's concern.

  FORT WORTH, Texas (BP) -- Forty years after the birth of the Southern Baptist Conservative Resurgence, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary is relocating from the J.W. MacGorman Chapel more than 40 stained glass windows commemorating the era.

• Bailey Smith, early SBC conservative president, dies

  DULUTH, Ga. (BP) -- Evangelist Bailey Smith, who helped sustain the Conservative Resurgence at its outset in the Southern Baptist Convention, died Monday morning (Jan. 14) at his home in Duluth, Ga. He was 79.

  Smith's election as SBC president in 1980 was the second victory for conservatives following the landmark election of the late Memphis pastor Adrian Rogers in 1979.

• Charles Fuller, SBC Peace Committee chair, dies

  ROANOKE, Va. (BP) -- Charles Fuller, a Virginia pastor who chaired the Southern Baptist Convention's Peace Committee, died July 28 in Roanoke, Va. He was 86.

  Formed in 1985 in response to a motion at the SBC annual meeting, the Peace Committee was charged to "seek to determine the sources" of controversy amid the convention's Conservative Resurgence and "make findings and recommendations." Fuller was thought a natural fit to chair the 22-member group -- which comprised conservatives, moderates and centrists -- because he was theologically conservative and committed to the SBC but not part of the Conservative Resurgence's "machinery," as Fuller put it. • Patterson-Humphreys atonement debate remembered

  NASHVILLE (BP) -- A 1987 debate on Christ's atonement between Paige Patterson and then-New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary theology professor Fisher Humphreys may have had "greater significance" in the Southern Baptist Convention's Conservative Resurgence than some have thought.

  FORT WORTH, Texas (BP) -- A new digital archive, “The Paige Patterson SBC Conservative Resurgence Collection,” provides insight into the role of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary’s president in Southern Baptists’ return to their biblical heritage.

  Materials in the archive at the seminary’s library include letters, pamphlets and audio recordings of conference presentations and debates significant to this period of Southern Baptist history.

  Patterson, Southwestern’s president since 2003, is one of the individuals most closely identified with the Conservative Resurgence. Read More

  DALLAS (BP) -- For pastor's wife Ritchie Hale, attending the 1985 Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting meant sleeping in a 1960 popup camper with her husband and four children amid 100-degree temperatures and thunderstorms. For Conservative Resurgence leader Morris Chapman, that meeting occasioned one of the clearest personal directives God had ever given him. For moderate leader Cecil Sherman, it was the first time he contemplated losing the battle for the SBC.

  All three knew the Dallas annual meeting 30 years ago was of monumental importance in the SBC's Conservative Resurgence. By some estimates, the 45,519 registered messengers may have constituted the largest deliberative body ever assembled. Read More
